Where should I go?

  • Lexington Pediatrics:
    • For most injuries or limited range of motion in an extremity
  • Go to PM Pediatrics if our office is closed AND:
    • Pain is severe and not improved after 2 hours of pain medicine
  • Go to the ER if:
    • An obvious deformity or bone is sticking out of skin
    • Loss of feeling or tingling in the extremity

Home Care:

  • You can give acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain. Ibuprofen is usually more effective for this type of pain.
  • For pain and swelling, you can apply a cold pack. Put the cold pack on the area for 20 minutes on, you can repeat this 4 times a day as needed.

Pain and swelling typically peak on day 2 or 3 of injury. The swelling typically resolves in 7 days, and the pain may take 2 weeks to completely go away. Most injuries can be evaluated here in our office. If an injury happens when we are closed, it is typically okay to wait to be seen the next day here unless the symptoms mentioned above are occurring.
