My child is older than 2 months old, where should I go?

  • Lexington Pediatrics:
    • Fever that is does not go down after taking medication
    • Fever 103 F or greater for 3 days
  • Go to PM Pediatrics if:
    • Difficulty breathing with a high fever
  • Go to the ER if:
    • Bluish lips or face
    • Limp, weak, not moving, unresponsive
    • Fever > 105 F
    • Had a seizure with the fever
    • Drinking very little and no urine output in the past 8 hour

Home Care:

Fever helps the body fight infection. The goal is to bring the fever down to a comfortable level.

  • Encourage drinking more fluids, this helps keep them hydrated.
  • For under 6 months old you can give Infant Tylenol (acetaminophen) based on their weight.
  • For 6 months and under, you should be taking a rectal temperature if fever is suspected.
  • For 6 months and older you can give acetaminophen or ibuprofen to help keep them comfortable. Medication is not typically needed for fevers 100-102 F. For fever 102-104 you should give medication if your child is uncomfortable. We do not expect the fever to go away completely, but it should come down 2 or 3 degrees. It takes 1 to 2 hours to see these effects.
